OK, First things first. The biggest question in every person's mind is "where do I start?"

Well there are firsts for everything, the film industry too is a first for many. Not everyone hails from a Film Family. That does not mean that the industry has closed door to non film family people. its just that it takes a bit more of an effort to prove yourself in front of others...

It pays to know your basics...

First lets get you to know the basics of films and tv

What is the main difference between Films and Television?

Well the size of the canvas is what comes to mind first, Films are made for huge screens of theaters whereas Television is restricted to the size of the television set. but apart from this difference there is another major difference. That is FPS (Frames Per Second) Films are projected at the rate of 24 Fps while television is telecast at 25 Fps. The film camera records 24 still images in a second of an action being shot onto the negative and it is played back through a projector at 24 fps and we see the movie in action.

There are various people working behind the camera to make what you see on screen. there are people who write, shoot, beautify, etc basically make things look good and presentable for the audience.

Secondly you need to know the various Departments of a film unit.

  • Producer
  • Director
  • Actor/Actress
  • Cinematographer or Director Of Photography (Cameraman for those not familiar with the term)
  • Script Writer (Includes Dialogue writer, Screenplay writer)
  • Action Director (Fight Master as Fondly Called on sets)
  • Choreographer (Dance Master)
  • Art Director
  • Make Up Artist
  • Sound Recordist
  • Costume Designer
  • Editor
  • Music Director
  • Lyrics Writer
  • Singer
  • Production Executive Or Production Manager
  • Special Effects Crew
  • Public Relations & Marketing

These are the core departments comprising a film unit.

These are followed by junior staff members or Assistants of each department. but that will be described in another article.

Similarly a Television unit too comprises of the same unit, albeit a few more departments like :

Executive Producer

Creative Head

Channel Creative Head
